    Cap-Gap Extension - I-20 Request Process

  • Some F-1 students may extend their F-1 status beyond the end of their academic program or any authorized Optional Practical Training (OPT, STEM OPT), if your employer files a timely "Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker" with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), requesting a change of status to H-1B status.

    To request a "Cap-Gap I-20" from the Office of International Affairs (OIA), complete the form below and follow these steps:

    1. Submit the following as PDF attachments at the bottom of this form:
      • A copy of receipt of Cap-Gap Extension Processing Fee;
      • A copy of Form I-797 Notice of Receipt, if your H-1B petition is still pending OR Notice of Approval, if your H1B petition has been approved;
      • A copy of your current EAD card
      • A copy of your most recent I-20
    2. OIA will create and mail a new Cap-Gap Extension I-20 to the email address indicated on the form.
    3. Processing time at OIA is 7-10 business days
    4. The Cap-Gap Extension I-20 must be submitted to your employer to verify the extension of your status.
