• Good Neighbor Scholarship (GNS) Program

  • The Good Neighbor Scholarship (GNS) Program is designed to encourage academically talented students from the countries of the Western (American) hemisphere (other than Cuba and the U.S.) to pursue higher education in the State of Texas. Thus, establishing a beneficial link between the State of Texas and the students' home country.

    • Student Eligibility 
      1. Be a native-born citizen and resident of an eligible country;
      2. Intend to return to the eligible country to live after completing the program of study;
      3. Not be a dual citizen of an eligible country and the United States of America;
      4. Have resided in the Western Hemisphere for at least five years;
      5. Meet basic scholastic and other admissions requirements of a participating institution; to include be in good academic standing to receive the award, and continuation of the award throughout the program. Undergraduates must have a GPA of 2.0 or better, and graduates must have a GPA of 3.0 or better at time of applying for scholarship;
      6. Have filed a selective service statement of registration status and proof of status with participating institution (Students on valid F-1 visa do not need to register);
      7. Not be a member of the Communist Party;
      8. Be recommended for the exemption by a participating institution that the applicant currently attends or will attend; and
      9. Be selected by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for exemption.
    • Award Amount 
      • Recipients are exempt from paying statutory tuition for 12 months at the start of the fall semester;
      • Exemption from tuition is only for courses in which the institution receives formula funding (i.e., a course that does not depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its costs).
      • Student must apply each year by the deadline date, and recommended each year by the participating institution.
      • Selection for the award is done by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
    • Annual Application deadline is 5 p.m. on February 15.
